Gill Bishop

Since retiring from a full time teaching career I pursued my long standing interest in art.

I remember going along to Joan Lilley's art studio with some trepidation when I began art classes in watercolour!  I soon became captivated by its magical properties and learnt so much from Joan`s expertise in this medium.  I gained experience by watching demonstrations and then having a go!  In 2014 I took classes with another professional artist, Carolyne Moran.  The focus was on still life and interiors, concentrating on careful observation.  We used acrylics, watercolours and mixed media.  In 2016 I attended an art course with Chris Wilmshurst and enjoyed experimenting with varied textures using acrylics and watercolours.

I enjoy sketching and painting outside capturing landscapes and seascapes in Britain , and abroad when on holiday.  I record my observations of form, tone and colour in my sketchbook and later develop them further at home.

I have been inspired by the work of Shirley Trevena and The Bloomsbury Group and of late enjoy work by David Curtis.  The Impressionists and Turner are among my favourite artists. I enjoy visiting exhibitions and galleries.

I joined Broadstone Art Society in 2017.  They are a forward thinking group, and their full programme of events, including visiting local artists who provide workshops, has aided my development.  I have benefited from the encouragement of members and by observation of their work.  I have exhibited paintings at several exhibitions since joining the club.
